DAR SURF is located in the surfing village of Taghazout, 40 minutes away from Agadir international airport, which is a very short hop from most European countries.

Taghazout is one of the closest places for any European surfer who wants to experience Moroccan culture and ride perfect waves.

There are direct flights from many major airports in Europe. Taghazout is just a 40-minute drive from Agadir airport. Travellers from the United States can connect in Casablanca, or at a European airport. Transfers from Marrakech can be arranged easily. If you hold an EU passport valid for 6 months beyond your return date, then you don’t need a visa to enter Morocco. If you hold a passport from outside the European Union, please check with the Moroccan Embassy in your country.

The official currency of Morocco is the Moroccan Dirham, denoted as MAD or Dhs. The Moroccan Dirham is composed of 100 centimes. Notes are available in denominations of (Dhs) 200,100, 50, 25 and 20. Coins are available in  denominations of (Dhs) 10, 5, 2 and 1. The conversion is very easy, inform yourself on the current rates, but (for indication only) 1 euro is roughly 11 Dhs,1 dollar is around 8 Dhs. Credit cards are often welcome. Travellers are advised to keep the receipts of currency exchange, as these will be required for the conversion of Dirham back to foreign currency prior to departure.

The coverage is good, and all European networks work in Morocco. There are plenty of public phones where you can make national and international calls for cheaply. There is free wifi available at our surf hostel, and in most restaurants. There are also a few Internet cafés in the village.

The surf and weather in Morocco are perfect for most of the year and DAR SURF operates all year.

During the summer we see small to meduim swells with surf mostly on the beaches, which is a perfect time for those who are looking for beach fun and surfing small waves.

In winter the waves are much better for all levels. There is a great variety of surf in the Tagahzout area between October to April, this is what makes the area a famous surfing mecca!

Beside surfing, swimming, and relaxing on the beach, there are many other activities to enjoy around the area. From walking in the mountains to swimming in the clear waters of Paradise Valley, and from quad biking to visiting the fascinating local markets.

Driving in Morocco is on the right side. The main roads are mostly in good condition. The rural ones can be more challenging, and night driving on these roads must be done with care. For each hire car two drivers are allowed, both must have held a valid driving licence for at least one year.

If you aren’t responsible for causing any damage to the vehicle, except for the tyres, then the insurance covers you totally. If you are responsible for causing an accident, then you will have to pay 5 per cent of any costs. It is vital to obtain a Police report in order for any insurance claims to be valid.

There is a bus stop in the centre of the village. The number of the Taghazout bus is 32, and bus 33 passes through Taghazout village en route to Tamri. There are also taxis next to the bus stop that operate between Agadir and Taghazout.

There is no bank or A.T.M in Taghazout yet, but in Banana village, a 10 min drive from Taghazout, there are banks and A.T.M.s. You can also change money in the surf shops in Taghazout.

In Morocco you can find a mixture of Arabic, Berber and European food. Restaurant prices are very reasonable, and the quality is good. The closest restaurant serving wine and beer is located in Banana village, a 10-minute drive from Taghazout. There are several restaurants in Agadir serving alcohol.

The village of Taghazout is one of the most chilled out places in the world. The locals live a simple and peaceful life. It is generally a very safe and friendly place but like anywhere else, there is a possibility of single girls being hassled or of belongings being stolen if you don’t take good care of them.

 

Local people in the village speak English and French as well as Arabic and Berber.

Although locals drink tap water tourists are advised to buy bottled water, which is widely available in the village at a low cost.

For most of the year the weather in Morocco is warm enough to wear shorts, T-shirts and flip-flops. The early morning and evenings can be chilly, especially in winter-time, so it’s advisable to bring some warm clothes. Hoodies and beanies can also be bought in the surf shops in Taghazout. As in many countries, it is advisable for both males and females to dress modestly when away from the beach.

There are no vaccinations required in order to enter Morocco. At DAR SURF we carry first aid equipment in case of an emergency and there are many hospitals and clinics in Agadir. Please ensure that you have travel insurance before you arrive, because medical charges will apply according to the treatment received.

In Taghazout there is a small local hospital, and a pharmacy, which is open everyday until 21h.
